According to Native legend, the Raven created every 10th bear white in colour to remind us of the time when the world was covered in ice. Spirit Bears, also called Kermode Bears, are unique to the West Coast of British Columbia and are a black bear carrying a genetic mutation that causes their hair to be white. We had the privilege of viewing them close up while in Great Bear Rainforest.
